By transforming backyards and green areas into learning spaces, the Escola Municipal do Campo Profª Andréa Ferraz de Oliveira, in Itararé, in the interior of São Paulo, opened up space to rescue memories, strengthen community bonds and value knowledge that spans generations.
Winner of the Nature-Based Schools Award last year, the school developed the Open Rooms: Reconnect with Nature project, which expanded the educational process beyond the school walls and diversified the locations for outdoor classes. Furthermore, the appreciation of local traditions and the opportunity to rethink practices to improve the quality of life in the territory are among the main objectives of the proposal.

To achieve this, the initiative found in the story of Eusa Rodrigues Pereira, a resident of the community who was the unit's cook for more than 30 years, a link between traditional knowledge and the feeling of belonging of the new generations.
“Dona Eusa has always practiced Creole seeds in her life and shared this ancestral knowledge with the school,” said teacher Dynná Ferraz, who works at the municipal school.
“The school embraced this knowledge, which is one of the important ways to change the way we produce food, since food security is a local and global problem that motivates this project”, he explained.
As a result of the project, the educational spaces began to include, for example, the Plant Nursery, formed by a vegetable garden, orchard and seed house, using techniques from the region's quilombola community.
"We have a partnership with the residents of the Quilombola Fazenda Silvério Community, whose community leader we affectionately call Tio Darci, who built a barred house with the participation of students. This house became Casa de Sementes Eusa Rodrigues Pereira", reported the teacher.
"There is an orchard behind the little barreada house, which is the seed house, and there is the little wood stove. The children play with the seeds in the play kitchen, which is under the orchard, with the clay and the plants. Nearby there is the vegetable garden, where they can plant and harvest, and we work on the issue of healthy eating."
"We built a library connected to a hammock and it became a calm corner. The children take a book, go down a wooden slide and go to the hammock. The area was already grassy and was free, but before it wasn't used much", explained Dynná.
Classes became more practical and interesting for the children, who already liked the school's open spaces, and teachers had more encouragement to carry out activities outside the traditional classroom. Dynná emphasizes that the proposal allows students to become more sensitive to contact with nature and realize the importance of natural resources.
"We also have a laboratory that serves as an investigation laboratory for students to carry out experiments. They plant and compare a bed that has mulch and another that doesn't, for example. In one bed, we put humus and in the other we don't, and they observe what happens. We make organic pesticides in the laboratory", mentioned the teacher, about the educational processes carried out at the school.
“Our school was already enriched with naturalized spaces, but the award, together with the mentoring, meetings, and visits from experts, made it possible to reorganize the spaces as open classrooms,” he said.
“These improvements have already been made and the school team sees in this project the impetus we needed to further improve our practices, allowing more concrete interventions to take place in our curriculum, with a direct impact on the community, opening up the possibility of expanding debates beyond our school community”, said Dynná.

The new edition of the Nature-Based Schools Award is open for registration until June 29th to support projects on this theme in municipal public schools. In total, five schools will receive R$100,000 each to develop their projects, in addition to technical support in the areas of architecture and education.
Promoted by Instituto Motiva, with technical and pedagogical support from Instituto Alana and Instituto Crescer, the award is part of the Nature-Based Schools Program, an initiative dedicated to training educators with a focus on a model in which nature becomes a central element in education.
Architect and urban planner Dayana Araújo, coordinator of the program at Instituto Alana, defends the recovery of children's bond with nature, which, according to her, has been lost over the years.
"Pedagogues and experts have spoken about the importance of 'unblocking' childhoods, because childhoods are walled up in their rooms, in their homes, on their screens. At the same time, the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics has announced 'Nature Deficit Disorder'. There are many areas of knowledge calling us to think about the importance of learning in nature", mentioned Dayana.
According to the president of Instituto Motiva, Renata Ruggiero, the award is a way of encouraging public schools to strengthen pedagogical practices aligned with contemporary environmental challenges.
"When school spaces incorporate natural elements and are used as learning environments, students develop new ways of observing, investigating and understanding the world around them. The award demonstrated the enormous potential that exists in Brazilian public schools to develop creative and transformative initiatives", said Renata.
