Vice-president Geraldo Alckmin said this Friday (12) that he will defend, together with the Federal Court of Auditors (TCU), the resumption of works on the Transnordestina railway in the stretch between Salgueiro and the Port of Suape. The route is between the Pernambuco municipalities of Ipojuca and Cabo de Santo Agostinho, in the Metropolitan Region of Recife.
In May, the court suspended the contracting of works on the stretch until the presentation of studies indicating the viability of the project. The portion of the railway network was resumed as public work after being returned by Transnordestina Logística S.A. (TLSA), in 2022.

Government will expand section of the Transnordestina railway in Pernambuco.
Commitment is not letting bombs harm the country, says Durigan.
"We are going to work with the TCU to release it as quickly as possible, because this section of the Transnordestina that comes to Suape has already been tendered and contracted. All it takes is for the TCU to give the ok and the works can begin", said Alckmin, during the inauguration of the new APM Terminals container terminal, at the Suape Industrial Port Complex.
The railway work is considered strategic by the government, which argues that the intervention promotes regional development, the reduction of logistical costs and the creation of jobs.
The process underway at the TCU related to Transnordestina involves the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT), the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (Dnit) and the Ministry of Transport.
The court of accounts determined that those involved should not assume new financial commitments related to the resumption of construction of the section, until the relevance and socioeconomic benefit of the project are correctly demonstrated.
In the decision, dated May 6, the body also gave Infra S.A., responsible for bidding for the project, a period of 30 days to present an updated action plan for the completion of a Technical, Economic and Environmental Feasibility Study (EVTEA). The study used for the work was prepared in 2017.
"This [delivery of the study] can be completed later. I think it is possible for us to move forward and start working on the works", added the vice-president.
On the 28th, the TCU determined new adjustments in the Transnordestina concession renegotiation process, imposing restrictions on the use of resources intended for restructuring the railway network.
The court of accounts prohibited amounts from compensation and conversion of fines from being used to cover the concessionaire's old obligations. The resources must be allocated exclusively to new investments in the railway.
New container terminal
This Friday, Alckmin participated in the inauguration of the new container terminal of APM Terminals, a company belonging to the Danish Maersk group. With an initial capacity to handle around 400,000 TEUs, the English term used for the standard size of a 20-foot container, the new terminal increases the handling capacity of the Pernambuco complex by 55%.
With fully electrified operation, the terminal received investments of more than R$2 billion. Furthermore, the operation has the potential to expand to more than 1.3 million TEUs annually.
“The port terminal is the first in the country and in Latin America to be 100% electrified, which shows concern about environmental issues,” stated Alckmin.

The vice-president also signed, together with the mayor of Recife, Victor Marques, service orders for the start of drainage and urbanization works on the Mauricéia, in Ipsep, and Sanbra, in Estância canals. The works are part of the Ministry of Cities' investment package for the prevention of disaster risks and climate adaptation in Brazilian cities and will contribute to the end of flooding in the Jardim São Paulo and Ribeira neighborhoods. More than R$60 million will be invested through the Growth Acceleration Program (New PAC), with municipal resources and the General Budget of the Union (OGU).
With the Minister of Ports and Airports, Tomé Franca, Alckmin also participated in the signing of the work order to begin dredging and readjustment of the waterway infrastructure at the Port of Recife. The work will feature federal investment of R$93.5 million, with completion scheduled for December 2026.
The transfer of R$ 14.5 million was also formalized for the replacement and modernization of the defenses of the port's berths, structures responsible for protecting vessels and piers during port operations.
