Daegu is considered the hottest city in the country in the summer. ‘Daefrica (Daegu + Africa)’, which refers to the region’s unique hot weather, has now become Daegu’s representative summer brand. Daegu City is using this image as a festival and tourism asset to grow the Daegu Chicken and Beer Festival, a representative summer festival in Korea. The Daegu Chicken and Beer Festival, which celebrates its 14th anniversary this year, will be held in the area of Duryu Park, Dalseo-gu, Daegu from the 1st to the 5th of next month. This is the first event to be held since the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's selection as a '2026 Preliminary Global Festival', and it promotes a global festival that combines K-food and K-culture with the theme of 'Chicken and Beer 26 (Takeoff)'. There is a historical background to Daegu being called the 'mecca of chicken and beer'. After the Korean War, the poultry industry grew rapidly in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions, and based on this, major domestic chicken brands were created one after another. As the country's highest summer heat has increased, a culture of enjoying chicken and cold beer together has become established. Afterwards, with the professional baseball craze and the spread of the Korean Wave, chicken and beer became Korea's representative food.
