Machines begin excavation to remove toxic poison from soil and river in the Southwest The overturning of a truck loaded with pesticides caused the contamination of a river and left residents without water supply in the region of Enéas Marques, in the southwest of Paraná. The accident happened on Thursday (12), on PR-180, between Francisco Beltrão and Dois Vizinhos. The approximately 120 families living in the Vista Alegre community are receiving water daily through a water truck provided by the city hall. According to the Water Association, once a day a water truck will supply the community's water tank. The artesian well that supplied the residents will be isolated for around 15 days, until the results of the water analysis are released. According to an investigation by RPC, an affiliate of TV Globo, a rural producer needed to prevent cattle from consuming water from the river and filed a police report reporting damage to the property. Also on Friday, specialized teams began removing contaminated soil from the sides of the highway. Machines were used to excavate areas affected by the product and prevent contamination from advancing further. The accident The truck transported fipronil from Rio Grande do Sul for deliveries to the municipalities of Dois Vizinhos and Palotina. After the accident, a specialized company was hired to collect the product and decontaminate the area. Still on Thursday (11), the day of the accident, teams collected gallons scattered across the track and applied products to contain the leak. However, according to information obtained by the RPC, the first truck destined to suction the insecticide accumulated in the containment basins arrived only during the night and was unable to remove all the material. A second piece of equipment only arrived the following morning, when part of the product had reached the river. Asked about the responsibility for containing the product, the IAT informed that loads of this type must have insurance coverage for emergency situations. "All these loads need to be insured precisely for cases like this. When an accident occurs, the company activates the insurance, which takes the necessary measures, such as containment and cleaning. The IAT monitors and, if environmental damage is proven, applies the appropriate penalties", informed the agency. In a statement, the carrier reported that response actions began shortly after the incident, but that the complexity of the situation required operational reinforcement from another base. The company also highlighted that heavy rains made containment work difficult. Enéas Marques City Hall reported that it assisted in the construction of barriers and containment ponds, but highlighted that the control of the incident is being carried out by specialized technical teams, with monitoring by the IAT and Civil Defense.
