Dam of the Rio Formoso project Disclosure/Government of Tocantins Three dams located in Formoso do Araguaia, in the south of Tocantins, are the target of a public civil action filed by the Public Ministry of Tocantins (MPTO), which points to risk in the structures. The body asked the Court to suspend the authorization to use artificial barriers and warned that the risk goes beyond the environmental dimension, affecting the safety of the population. The action was filed against the Government of Tocantins, the Nature Institute of Tocantins (Naturatins) and the Rio Formoso Irrigation District (DIRF), responsible for the administration, supervision and operation of the structures. (See positioning below). The Taboca, Calumbi I and Calumbi II dams are responsible for storing water used in cultivation areas in the Rio Formoso region and were built between 1979 and 1982. According to the MP, inspections carried out over the years by Naturatins classified the three dams in Class A, a category that includes structures with high risk and high potential damage associated. The technical documents would point out problems such as infiltrations, internal erosion processes, cracks, tree vegetation on the slopes, deterioration of structural components and the absence of adequate monitoring systems. 📱 Click here to follow the g1 TO channel on WhatsApp Now on g1 The Taboca Dam draws attention because it accumulates around 142 million cubic meters of water, is 25 meters high and has almost 10 kilometers of dikes. According to the MP, the structure even registered a partial rupture in 2002. In 2025, an assessment by Naturatins would have raised its classification to the highest risk level ever recorded. In addition to suspending the use authorization, the Public Ministry requested that emergency works be initiated within 30 days to contain infiltrations, internal erosion, cracks and collapses. The Rio Formoso Irrigation District reported that it was not aware of the action. g1 contacted the Government of Tocantins and Naturatins to request a position on the case, but did not receive a response until the last update of this report.
