The National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea) released production and sales data for the month of May. 253.5 thousand vehicles were manufactured and 274.7 thousand registered. The only segment that did not show an increase was trucks and buses, for which there is an expectation of an increase in sales with subsidies from the Move Brasil 2 program.
According to the entity, the index represents an increase of 15.2% when compared to the month of May 2025 and was the best result for a month since 2019. With 1.1 million units produced, there was also an increase of 7.1% over the first five months of 2025.

Production and sales of vehicles fall in January, points out Anfavea.
"The strength of this production pace comes from the rise in car sales (+21.5%), which includes the good performance of entry-level cars with the Sustainable Car program. Light commercial vehicles, such as pickup trucks, vans and vans, have also been growing (+7.7%), while trucks (-15.1%) and buses (-16.3%) are still falling", indicated the sector analysis.
The increase in global fuel prices has presented itself as a worrying economic factor, as it increases production costs and accumulates at the end of the chain, among consumers, putting pressure on inflation and the rate of interest cuts by the Central Bank, according to Anfavea.
Sales had a similar pace
The month of May had the best daily sales average since December 2014, with 13.7 thousand vehicles (sum of light and heavy vehicles) sold per day. Total registrations in May were 274.7 thousand units, 21.7% more than what was sold in May last year. Accumulated sales also surpassed the symbolic milestone of 1 million units one month before 2025, with 1,148.2 thousand units, an accumulated growth of 16.4%.
Manufacturers pointed to the rise in sales of electrified vehicles (electric, hybrids and plug-in hybrids) as a relevant part of this positive result. The segment's share increased from 10.6% in June 2025 to 19.5% in May. It was the month with the highest sales of pure electric vehicles, reaching 21 thousand units, while the total number of hybrids sold was 30.7 thousand.
Falling exports, rising imports
Sales abroad in 2026 have seen a significant drop, mainly to partners in South America. The main partner continues to be Argentina, which purchased 89.6 thousand units, a decline of 33.3%. Mexicans purchased 31.6 thousand units, a decrease of 0.5% and Colombians 17.7 thousand, an increase of 14.5%. Sales also fell to Chile (-19.6%) and Uruguay (-34.5%), partners who purchased less than 10 thousand vehicles each.
The main supplier of vehicles for the Brazilian market in 2026 will be China, from which we imported 108.4 thousand units between January and May, an increase of 86.6%. Argentine models fell by 16.8%, with a total of 71.3 thousand. Imported sales in May were 55 thousand units, totaling 223 thousand in the first five months, an increase of 17.4%, more than double the sales of domestic ones.
