There was an opinion from the Jeju Island Council that slot expansion is necessary to solve the Jeju air seat shortage problem. At the 452nd Jeju Island Council (temporary session) Culture, Tourism and Sports Committee meeting held on the 14th, Rep. Kim Bong-hyun said, “Even though Jeju International Airport has facilities that can handle up to 40 times per hour, the number of slots has remained at 35 per hour for 7 years.” Slots are the number of aircraft takeoffs and landings that an airport can handle per hour. According to Rep. Kim, the number of seats on domestic flights this summer decreased by about 210,000 compared to last year, and the average load factor in April was 95.7%. Rep. Kim said, “The number of seats on the Jeju route has decreased significantly due to the recent surge in fuel surcharges and changes in equipment due to the integration of Korean Air and Asiana,” adding, “It is difficult for residents to obtain airline tickets even for essential travel such as hospital treatment or business trips.” He pointed out. He continued, “As an additional supply of approximately 1.1 million seats per year and an economic effect of more than KRW 1 trillion can be expected even if the slots are expanded just once per hour, the normalization of slots must be promoted as the top priority in Jeju’s aviation policy.
