Personal trainer Carlos Alexandre, 47, used the Heimlich Maneuver to save a gym student who was choking on water, in the Parangaba neighborhood, in Fortaleza. The case was recorded by the establishment's security cameras last Monday (15).
In an interview with g1, Carlos was waiting for a client to arrive while performing calf exercises. He noticed that the man appearing in the images started to choke, but thought it was something simpler, that he didn't need intervention.

As the choking didn't go away, the staff decided to intervene and apply the Heimlich Maneuver to save him. The attempt worked.
Carlos Eduardo reinforces the importance of people learning the technique to save someone from choking. "Often, people think it's just a cough, that they're feeling sick. One day it could happen to someone in front of you. You could do it and save a life," he says.

How and why do the Heimlich maneuver?
Performing this maneuver is important because it helps to unblock the trachea. The Heimlich maneuver is a type of hug from behind, just above the belly, to try to expel food or a foreign body.
In the case of adults, position yourself behind the person and wrap your arms around the victim's abdomen (if it is a child, kneel first), if they are conscious.
One of the hands must remain closed over the so-called “pit of the stomach” or epigastric region (see location below).
The other hand compresses the first, at the same time pushing the “pit of the stomach” inwards and upwards, as if wanting to lift the victim off the ground.

The Ministry of Health advises that compression movements must be made inwards and upwards (like a letter “J”), until the victim eliminates the foreign body.
Tip: If the person is talking, coughing or crying, do not perform the maneuver, as the victim can still breathe.
