The federal government intends to implement the Federal University of Sport (UFEsporte) at the beginning of 2027, an institution that will aim to promote teaching, research, extension and innovation in the area of ​​sports science. The project that creates this institution that trains professionals focused on sports was approved on Tuesday (16) by the Senate and is now awaiting presidential approval to become law. According to the Minister of Sports, Paulo Henrique Cordeiro, the Federal University of Sport could begin to be implemented at the beginning of next year [2027], if the regulatory stages progress as planned. "We are looking to get the university up and running as soon as possible. If we can do it at the beginning of next year, it will be ideal. We also need to work to format how it will work", said Cordeiro this Wednesday (17) during the program Bom Dia, Minister, produced by Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC). UFEsporte The result of a partnership between the Ministries of Sport and Education, UFEsporte will work in several areas, aiming to train managers, referees and coaches, as well as teachers, researchers and specialists in the various initiatives focused on sport. To this end, it will offer undergraduate, postgraduate and technological courses. “The important thing is that it [UFEsporte] is created,” he added. According to the minister, the creation of the new university makes Brazil follow the examples of other successful countries in the sporting field, which are already working in this direction, “with academic structures specifically focused on sport”. UFEsporte will also need to be regulated, which, according to the minister, will be done “as soon as possible”. He recalled that there are already several colleges and centers in Brazil that train physical education professionals. “What we need now is to move forward to take care of sport governance in a more improved way.” The text approved by the Senate provides that the institution will also work on qualifying professionals for the management of public sports policies, training athletes and developing scientific activities aimed at the sector. Furthermore, the proposal establishes that the university will be able to contribute to social inclusion, with actions aimed at parasports and the promotion of gender and ethnic-racial equality, in addition to combating discrimination in the sporting environment.
