According to the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship (MDHC), between January 2024 and April 2026, more than 1.6 million reports of violence against the elderly were registered via the Dial 100 channel. The numbers still hide the majority of victims, who, according to the ministry, do not report violations, often for fear of retaliation. According to the employee of the National Secretariat for the Rights of the Elderly, Mayra Magalhães, there are records of various forms of violence. "Physical, psychological violence, financial or property violence, neglect or abandonment, sexual violence." >> Follow the Agência Brasil channel on WhatsApp According to the National Observatory of Human Rights (ONDH), the most recurrent types are physical and psychological violations and negligence, mostly committed against women aged between 70 and 74 years. The main suspects are family members. Mayra Magalhães explains that Brazilian legislation provides for both administrative and civil sanctions and criminal punishments for those who violate the rights of elderly people, and penalties vary from detention or imprisonment, as well as fines, depending on the severity. "In addition to the criminal spheres for individuals, the Statute also provides for severe punishments for institutions, such as long-term care institutions that violate the rights of elderly people. Examples of sanctions are fines, closure of the establishment, prohibition of contracting with public authorities and the removal of managers." The alert directs victims or witnesses to use the reporting channels. Dial 100, which operates 24 hours a day, and reports can be made anonymously, to police stations, the Public Prosecutor's Office, as well as the Social Assistance Reference Center and the Specialized Social Assistance Reference Center.
