Between flowers, prayers and gestures of sharing, hundreds of faithful participated this Friday (13) in the celebrations of Saint Anthony's Day at the Capuchin Church, in the neighborhood of Guamá, in Belém. The program began in the early hours of the day and brought together devotees who came to thank the graces achieved and renew requests to the saint, one of the most popular in the Catholic Church.
Retired Janete Santos was at the church to thank her for gaining her own home, a request that, according to her, she made many years ago.
"I asked him to start and finish my house. Today it is entirely made of masonry. Saint Anthony interceded for me", he stated.
Gratitude also led retiree Sandra Nascimento to the celebration. Devoted since her youth, she attributes her children's religious formation to the saint.
"My children are all devotees of Saint Anthony because they were raised here. We are happy and very satisfied by grace, by everything", he said.
Known for its tradition of helping those most in need, Saint Anthony is remembered by Catholics as an example of charity and solidarity. One of the best-known manifestations of devotion to the saint is the blessing and distribution of bread, carried out during celebrations.
The bread symbolizes providence and sharing, values associated with the trajectory of Saint Anthony. According to Friar Raphael Hattyla, president of Casa do Pão, the tradition carries meaning that goes beyond food.
"The delivery of the bread has this dimension of God's providence, but also of solidarity with those who need it most", he explained.
Devotion to the saint also marked the story of the couple Valdinete and Everson Rolim. The two met during the feast dedicated to Saint Anthony and, years later, they got married. "She came to do the trifecta and asked. And I showed up", joked Everson.
For Valdinete, faith remains present in the family’s life. "In reality, Saint Anthony is this intercessor who can grant us graces. That's why every year we renew this grace and our requests as well", he stated.
