Small businesses were responsible for 59% of formal jobs created in the state of Rio de Janeiro in the first quarter of 2026. According to a survey by Sebrae Rio, micro and small companies generated more than 12.9 thousand formal jobs in the period.
In the interior of the state, the Mountain Region stood out with the creation of around 1,500 jobs. In the North of Fluminense, Macaé appears among the municipalities that generated the most jobs through small businesses, with a balance of 699 formal vacancies.
The data also shows that the Home and Construction, Administrative Services and Facilities and Education sectors led the opening of vacancies in the state, with 3,700, 3,300 and 3,000 jobs, respectively.

Comparing the last 12 months, micro and small companies were responsible for 83.5 thousand new jobs, equivalent to 76% of all vacancies open in Rio de Janeiro. The result places the state in second place nationally in job creation by small businesses, behind only São Paulo.
According to the superintendent director of Sebrae Rio, Antonio Alvarenga, the numbers reinforce the role of entrepreneurship in the economy of Rio de Janeiro.
"In the challenging scenario of the Brazilian economy, small businesses in Rio de Janeiro remain strong as a driver of formal job creation. The data reinforces the importance of entrepreneurship not only as a vector of income generation and productive inclusion, but as a resilient base of the state's formal job market", he stated.
In Petrópolis, in the Serrana Region, a recently opened pizzeria is an example of this movement. The Di Blasi Pizzas unit, opened in May, had to expand its team a few weeks after starting operations due to increased demand.
The operation started with four employees and grew to seven employees in about two weeks. According to the company, sales growth exceeded initial expectations.
"The result achieved in Petrópolis exceeded our expectations and showed the strength of the local market. The increase in demand required new hires in the first few weeks, generating opportunities and boosting the city's economy", stated the network's CEO, Arnaldo Di Blasi.
For Sebrae Rio, cases like this help explain the performance of micro and small companies, which continue to be the main responsible for generating formal jobs in the state.
