The tegu (Salvator merianae) is considered the largest lizard in Brazil. The animal's body can reach around 50 centimeters in length, but, including the tail, some specimens can measure up to 2 meters. The species has a color that mixes shades of black, yellow and white, as well as light spots on the sides of the body.
With omnivorous eating habits, the tegu has a very varied diet, which includes carrion, insects, birds, rodents, amphibians, other lizards, eggs, fruits and leaves. By consuming different types of fruits, the animal also plays an important role in dispersing seeds and maintaining ecosystems.
