The Climate and Society Institute (iCS) launched a call for proposals to support climate change adaptation projects developed by indigenous, quilombola, rural, peripheral urban and coastal communities in seven Brazilian states. The public call will make R$4 million available to finance between eight and ten proposals aimed at strengthening climate resilience in vulnerable territories. Registration is open until July 1st. Each project may receive between R$200,000 and R$700,000, with an execution period of up to 18 months. Related news: Most cities in Brazil do not have an action plan for extreme heat. The initiative includes communities located in Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraíba and Pernambuco. According to iCS, the states were chosen because they concentrate populations exposed to high levels of climate risk and socioeconomic vulnerability, according to data from the Adapta Brasil platform, from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI). Proposals must be constructed through participatory processes and consider climate impacts already observed in the territories, such as heat waves, prolonged droughts, floods, floods, landslides, landslides and forest fires. The notice also seeks innovative initiatives, with potential for replication in other locations. The Engagement, Agents of Change and Climate Governance manager at iCS, Tatiana Lobão, highlights the importance of strengthening local responses to the climate crisis. "Adaptation does not just happen in large plans or infrastructures. It also happens in territories, in the concrete lives of communities that already live daily with droughts, floods, heat waves and other extreme weather events", said Tatiana. Civil society organizations and community associations may compete. Universities and public research institutions will only be able to participate as technical partners, offering scientific, methodological or implementation support to community-led initiatives. In addition to supporting local actions, the notice aims to contribute to the international debate on the Global Goal on Adaptation – GGA, a commitment established within the scope of the Paris Agreement to measure the progress of climate adaptation in countries.
