The movie ‘Moana’, which will be released in Korea on the 8th of next month, is largely based on the story of the first animation ‘Moana’, in which Moana, the girl chosen by the sea, saves an island from a curse with the legendary hero Maui. Thomas Kyle, a Broadway director who created musicals such as ‘Hamilton’ and ‘In the Heights,’ took the lead. The biggest key when turning animation into live action is casting. The production team sought to create both familiarity and unfamiliarity at the same time. Dwayne Johnson, who dubbed Maui's voice in the original, chose 'new face' Catherine Lagaia for the role of Moana instead of keeping her in the same role. According to director Kyle, who met via video on the 29th, a total of 32,000 candidates applied for the role of Moana. The director said, “When I watched the first audition video of Catherine singing ‘How Far I’ll Go’ (Moana’s signature song), I had the feeling that ‘this actress understands Moana’s longing.’”
