The biggest change has been made in the registration deadline. Earlier, after completion of 180 days in India, foreign citizens had to get registered within 14 days. Now they will be able to register anytime before the completion of 180 days. The government has also tightened the rules for late registration. After the stipulated time, registration will be approved only under special circumstances. Provision for online appeal has been added. For the first time, the provision of online appeal has been added. A person affected by an order will now be able to appeal online to the Commissioner of the Bureau of Immigration. Appeal has to be made within 30 days of receiving the order. The commissioner will have to give his decision after hearing the concerned party. Efforts will have to be made to settle the matter within 60 days. Rules related to citizenship of children also changed. If one of the parents is an Indian citizen and wants to retain the Indian citizenship of the child, then the rules regarding registration of foreign citizens will not apply to the child. At the same time, if a child living in India acquires citizenship of another country, his parents will have to inform this to the registration officer within 30 days. The Home Ministry has made these changes under Section 30 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. For this, Immigration and Foreigners (Amendment) Rules, 2026 have been issued.
