Fire hits Lamas restaurant, the oldest in operation in Rio

The fire started in a fryer in the kitchen and was brought under control shortly after an hour, at 6:40 pm. Firefighters are currently working to clean the building.

Opened in 1874, the restaurant was established in Largo do Machado. In addition to its international cuisine, which has always attracted tourists from countless countries, the place has become a meeting point for intellectuals, politicians, writers, journalists, university students and artists such as musicians, film, theater and television actors and actresses.
The place was frequented by personalities such as architect Oscar Niemeyer, writers Manuel Bandeira, Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, Olavo Bilac and Vinícius de Moraes, as well as presidents Getúlio Vargas and Juscelino Kubistchek.
It is mentioned in the verses of the song Rio Antigo, by Chico Anysio and Nonato Buzar. The most famous interpretation was in the voice of the singer Alcione.
In 1974, it was moved to Rua Marquês de Abrantes, due to work on the Metro route.
