Watch the moment helicopter crashes after collision in Rio de Janeiro
The mid-air collision of two aircraft, as occurred between two helicopters in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday (14), is a very rare accident in Brazilian aviation. The data comes from Cenipa, the Brazilian authority responsible for investigating air disasters.
From 2016 to 2026, there were only four cases of this type in Brazil — in a universe of 1,625 accidents. The occurrences were classified as "loss of separation/collision in flight". One person died.
The number does not take into account Sunday's tragedy in Rio — which, with six deaths, is the most serious in the last ten years.
See the list of occurrences:
March 30, 2016: Two agricultural planes crashed in flight during spraying in the city of Luiz Alves, in Santa Catarina. One of the aircraft lost control and crashed into the ground — the pilot died. The investigation highlighted flaws in flight planning and the company that owned the aircraft.
July 19, 2016: an aircraft landing at São José airport, in Pará, hit the roof of another about to take off. One person was slightly injured: the commander of the struck aircraft. Cenipa's investigation concluded that the plane that was landing should have gone into a dive.
July 12, 2018: two instruction aircraft crashed in the air over the runway at Itápolis airport, in the interior of São Paulo. Three crew members were involved: all had minor injuries. The investigation found an error on the part of one of the pilots — who was not very experienced as he was making his first flight from the ground — and his instructor who was on the ground.
January 8, 2026: two aircraft crashed during spraying activity in Paraguaçu Paulista, in the interior of São Paulo. Both made emergency landings. The two crew members (one pilot from each plane) escaped without serious injuries. The incident is under investigation.
Most serious collision in the history of Brazilian aviation
A Gol plane that crashed in Mato Grosso in 2006 after hitting a Legacy jet killed 154 people.
FAB/Disclosure
Cenipa data takes into account accidents since 2016. Therefore, it does not include the most serious collision in the history of Brazilian aviation: the in-flight collision between a Gol Boeing 737-800 and a Legacy jet, on September 29, 2006.
The Gol plane fell apart after being hit in the wing by the Legacy and crashed in Mato Grosso — 154 people died. The jet, with seven passengers, managed to land in Serra do Cachimbo, in Pará. The investigation highlighted a failure in the coordination of control centers and misinterpretation of air traffic authorizations by the crew of the Legacy jet.
