City Hall criticizes 'federal omission'
The Skeleton Bridge is located on Estrada Doutor Cássio de Freitas Levy and is the responsibility of the federal government. Videos recorded at the site show the size of the structure (watch above).
Limeira City Hall informed that it will sue the federal government for failure to act on the structure.
In a statement, the municipal administration said that it “had been adopting administrative measures and demanding action from the federal agencies responsible for the area” and that the tragedy “makes the continuation of this omission unsustainable and unacceptable.” The report asked the Federal Government for a position on the case.
According to the municipal administration, responsibility for inspection, maintenance and access control to the Skeletor Bridge lies exclusively with the federal government.
The City Hall and the City Council had already sent letters to the responsible bodies demanding security measures. "No concrete measures were adopted", he pointed out.
"In addition to the circumstances that led to the young woman's death, it is necessary to determine responsibility for the lack of access control to a federal area that, for years, has presented known risks and continues without the necessary protective measures. The City Hall and the Chamber have been demanding measures for months so that the Federal Government assumes its responsibility. Unfortunately, the federal omission has just resulted in another tragedy in Limeira", said Mayor Murilo Félix (Podemos).
Bridge belonged to a section of the old railway network, says União
In a note this Sunday (14), the Union Heritage Secretariat (SPU) lamented the tragedy, expressed solidarity with the victim's friends and family, and said that the bridge belonged to a section of the former Federal Railway Network (RFFSA) that had never been implemented, inside private properties.
The SPU pointed out that it never authorized any sporting or other activity on the Skeletor Bridge.
Furthermore, the secretariat highlighted that the incorporation of the bridge into its heritage was only authorized in 2026 and that, despite this, since 2024, it has asked local city halls for support to block access to the bridge.
"We understand that public authorities at all levels need to immediately join forces to definitively prevent access to the Esqueleto Bridge and curb illegal activities. And, subsequently, decide the future of the Esqueleto Bridge jointly", he added.
The tragedy
A video circulating on social media shows Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas being carried by three employees to the edge of the platform. She is propelled forward and, shortly after the fall, screams of despair are heard saying "the rope" and "people, the rope".
The young woman fell from a height of 40 meters and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Samu and Fire Department teams.
According to the Civil Police, the thick equipment that should have been attached to the victim's body to arrest the fall was forgotten and remained rolled up on the floor of the jump structure.
A witness, who would jump right after the young woman, reported that the instructors did not carry out a safety check when Maria Eduarda was there.
According to witnesses and the Civil Police, there was a serious failure in checking the equipment and the instructors simply forgot to connect the security system in Maria Eduarda.
A customer who would jump shortly thereafter reported that employees ignored the standard conference when it was her turn. The thick rope that was supposed to catch the young woman's fall remained tangled up on the floor of the platform.
In a statement to the police, the three arrested instructors were unable to explain the reason for the error. The delegate responsible for the case stated that they appeared bewildered and claimed not to remember who was responsible for placing the rope, nor why the final inspection had not been carried out before pushing the victim.
