Aging fleet in Americana exceeds 40%; Population age and income are among possible factors, says urban planner Reproduction/EPTV With the oldest fleet among the most populous cities in the Campinas region, according to the São Paulo State Department of Traffic (Detran-SP), Americana (SP) boasts nearly century-old examples in circulation. Official records indicate that three models from 1929 are registered in the municipality. The informal title of "old vehicle champion" comes after Detran-SP highlighted that 40.5% of the fleet is made up of vehicles over 20 years old. In other words, at least four out of every ten models in circulation fit this criterion. A survey by g1 based on data from Senatran (National Traffic Secretariat) shows that there were 50 thousand vehicles manufactured in the 20th century - until the year 2000. 📱 Download the g1 app to see news from the region in real time and for free In addition to the three examples from 1929, the fleet has four units manufactured in the 1930s and five from the 1940s. See chart below: For urban planner João Verde, the high percentage of vehicles over 20 years old in Americana may be related to the city's demographic and economic characteristics. He states that the municipality has a proportionally older population and that there is less renewal among younger residents. According to the expert, residents' income can also influence the scenario. “This population mostly lives on retirement, and the city’s general income may be lower,” he states. Americana is the city among the 10 largest in the region where the most old cars circulate In Verde's assessment, this set of factors helps explain why the city has a greater share of old cars compared to others in the region. He highlights that the economic profile and dynamism of cities are usually reflected in the fleet. “We see how the city is in terms of economic strength and economic dynamism also through vehicles”, he adds.
