Facade of the Federal Public Ministry in Rondônia MPF/Disclosure The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) filed a lawsuit to hold those involved responsible for an environmental disaster that left around 100 families isolated and caused damage to vegetation, rivers and streams in the region. The case occurred in March 2019, in Oriente Novo, district of Machadinho d’Oeste (RO). The action calls for the total recovery of the degraded area and compensation for environmental and social damages. At the time of the disaster, the mud reached around 114.57 hectares, destroyed native vegetation, contaminated waterways, killed fish, worsened water quality and destroyed bridges used by residents. The investigation began shortly after the disaster, through a civil inquiry. According to the MPF, the problem occurred after the collapse of structures such as landfills, dikes and dams used in mining activities, which gave way after heavy rains in the region. The reports indicate that there was no tailings dam failure, but that the collapse of these structures caused a large flood of mud and sediment. The MPF points out that the fragility of the facilities and mining activity may have worsened the impacts. In the action, the MPF asks that the area be recovered through a Degraded Area Recovery Plan (PRAD), in addition to condemning those responsible to pay compensation for environmental damage, for the period in which the area remains degraded and for collective moral damage. g1 sought out everyone mentioned in the process, but did not receive a response until the last update of the report.
