The Swiss rejected the popular anti-immigration initiative presented by the radical right that aimed to limit the country's population, according to projections by research institute gsf.bern.
The vote, which was announced to be very close, would have ended with the 'No' victory with 55%, according to the gsf.bern projection published 30 minutes after the electoral zones closed.
"We are very relieved and happy. It is an important result for our country and for our relations with the EU", declared the director of the employers' organization Economiesuisse, Monika Rühl, on the public channel RTS.
The government, Parliament, the main political parties, unions and employers were against the measure.

If approved, the measure could jeopardize relations between Switzerland and the European Union, its main trading partner, with which it maintains close economic ties despite not being a member of the bloc.
The text, presented by the Democratic Union of the Center (UDC, radical right), the country's main party, intended to limit immigration to prevent the permanent population from exceeding 10 million people by 2050.
In Switzerland, foreigners represent more than 25% of the population.
According to the text's promoters, the initiative should avoid a shortage of housing, rising rents, out-of-control urbanization, traffic jams, crowded trains, an increase in crime, a health system at its limit and the low quality of education.
In another referendum, the Swiss approved, according to first estimates, the proposed law to tighten access to the civil service, in a scenario in which the war in Ukraine and geopolitical tensions lead several countries to reinforce their armies.
