The Russian composer was a fan of Zenit Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). But he also trained as a referee and wrote about some matches for Soviet newspapers. His music for the ballet "The Golden Age", about a Russian soccer team that goes to compete in other European countries, was intended to be a criticism of capitalism, but ended up being censored by his compatriots.
