Ebola
Ebola virus disease is a serious infection transmitted from person to person. Infection occurs through direct or indirect contact with blood, body fluids or secretions (feces, urine, saliva, semen) of infected people, but only when they show symptoms. The virus is not transmitted through the air.
According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the disease generally has a high mortality rate, but in the current Ebola outbreak, this rate varies between 55% and 60%.
The Ebola virus first emerged in 1976 in a village near the Ebola River, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire). Since its detection, several outbreaks of the disease have occurred in different parts of Africa.
To date, there have been no confirmed cases of Ebola in Brazil.
