"He always commented that he had problems with pedestrians on the bike path. One day he almost fell, the next he almost ran over. It was constant", he says.
The cyclist was traveling through the area designated for bicycles when he collided with two women who were stopping to take photos in the cycle lane. With the impact, he lost his balance, invaded the vehicle lane and was run over by a car.
The man was trapped under the vehicle and died at the scene. The driver of the car took a breathalyzer test, which did not indicate the presence of alcohol.
The two pedestrians, who live in Carazinho, were taking photos for social media at the time of the collision. They are expected to give a statement to the police this week.
According to delegate Daniela Mineto, head of the Homicide and Personal Protection Police Station (DHPP), they are investigated for culpable homicide, when there is no intention to kill. The Civil Police analyzes new images of the incident to determine the responsibility of the pedestrians.
Passo Fundo has more than 37 kilometers of cycling network. In more recent spaces, there is a separation between the cycle path and the so-called 'walkway'. On older sections, the division is not well defined, which increases the risk of accidents, despite signage in shared areas.
The municipal secretary of Public Security, Tadeu Trindade, explains that pedestrians should use the sidewalk when there is no specific space for walking. “Today we have cycle lanes that are exclusively for cyclists, there cannot be pedestrians there”, he states.
