Federal Government should publish expansion of mullet fishing
The federal government stated on Thursday (9) that it will increase the capture quota for mullet in the traditional form of beach trawling in Santa Catarina. The measure will only be valid for artisanal fishermen in the north of the state and comes after the temporary suspension of the practice, motivated by the proximity of the catch limit for the season.
The decision to suspend fishing was announced on Sunday (7) and generated strong criticism in the state. The federal government, however, justified that the ban occurred to preserve the species after the authorized collective limit reached 90%, corresponding to 1,198.8 tons.
The decision to expand fishing only in the northern region of Santa Catarina was taken because schools of mullet arrive later in this area. Historically, the species begins its migration from the south and only reaches the north of the state in July.

In a statement, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture stated that the catch can only be released after the publication of a joint order with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. Until this Wednesday morning (10), however, the document had not been released.
🐟🐟🐟 Started in May, trawling is a heritage of Santa Catarina and traditionally takes place until the end of July. In the state, the first days of the season saw large hauls of mullet, excess fish and sales difficulties due to supply.
📌 According to the federal government, the quota serves to limit the amount of fish that can be caught with the aim of preventing predatory fishing of the species, scientifically named mugil liza, and ensuring that the species does not become extinct, thus allowing the animal to reproduce.
Where do mullets come from?
The mullet species found in southern Brazil lives in freshwater most of the year. During the winter, the species migrates from the Rio da Prata basin, in Argentina and Uruguay, and from Lagoa dos Patos, in Rio Grande do Sul, to spawn on the beaches of Santa Catarina.
The animal is also fished off the coast of São Paulo, but in different ways.
