Rare jaguar record on Bananal Island
A jaguar was recorded by the “Tucãtins Silvestre” project in the Bananal Island region. The shot shows the largest feline in the Americas walking in its natural habitat. Started in September 2025, the monitoring resulted in the animal being registered in the early hours of April 28, after months of monitoring by researchers.
According to those responsible for the project, the recording took place around 1 am, a time compatible with the species' nocturnal habits. The images show the animal traveling through the monitored area while patrolling the territory.

Registration reinforces the importance of conservation
The jaguar (Panthera onca) is considered a fundamental species for environmental balance. As a top predator in the food chain, it helps control populations of other species and contributes to the health of ecosystems.
In addition to preserving wildlife, the presence of the species is also related to the conservation of important natural resources, such as the quality of water, soil and biodiversity.

Species faces threats
Despite its ecological importance, the jaguar faces a series of challenges. Among the main threats are the loss of habitat caused by the advance of the agricultural frontier, in addition to deforestation and fires
In the Cerrado, much of the original vegetation has been suppressed over the last few decades. In the Amazon, where the largest continuous population of the species on the planet is concentrated, deforestation continues to put pressure on the areas occupied by animals.
Classified as vulnerable to extinction in Brazil, the jaguar is considered one of the main symbols of national biodiversity.
