Lawyer and businessman Adriano Cordeiro used social media to report that he almost died after being swept away by a whirlpool at Cachoeira do Mutum, in Presidente Figueiredo, in the interior of Amazonas. According to him, the incident happened during a walk in the area and only ended in tragedy thanks to the action of a friend who managed to rescue him.
In a video published on the internet, Adriano said that he was swimming near the waterfall when he was surprised by the strength of the current.
"This whirlpool took me down, to the bottom, twice. It all happened so quickly. Even though I knew how to swim very well, I couldn't get out. I thought I was going to die", he reported.

According to the businessman, he already knew the waterfall and had taken the same route on other occasions without facing any difficulties. Still, he ended up being pulled by the current and lost control of the situation.
"It wasn't the first time I went to Cachoeira do Mutum. I had already done this same route, swimming in front of the waterfall from one buoy to another. And even though I knew how to swim very well, I almost died," he said.
His wife, who accompanied the riverbank walk, also participated in the report and described the moments of tension experienced by the group.
"It's scary to see someone you love disappear out of nowhere. Adriano swam close to the waterfall and, when he got close, the whirlpool pulled him in. We heard the calls for help, but at first we thought it was a joke. In a matter of seconds he disappeared into the water", he said.
According to her, a friend who was with the couple realized the seriousness of the situation and dove in to help him. Adriano sank and came back to the surface more than once before being reached.
"The boy jumped and managed to catch him when he returned to the surface. They were still being carried by the whirlpool for a few moments until they were able to hold on to a buoy", he reported.
After the scare, Adriano took the opportunity to warn visitors who frequent waterfalls and bathing areas with currents.
"When you go to the waterfall, be very careful. Even if you know how to swim, never let self-confidence speak louder than prudence. I had the opportunity to escape and return to my family, but it could have been different," he said.
The businessman stated that he decided to share the experience to warn other people about the risks of areas with whirlpools, even for those who have swimming experience.

Millennial holes and hidden risks
Cachoeira do Mutum, in Presidente Figueiredo, is known for its rock formations that resemble large natural “bathtubs” carved by the force of water over millions of years. The holes, called marmites in geology, reach more than six meters deep and are among the main tourist attractions in the area.
Researchers point out that the cavities began to form around 5 million years ago and were shaped by the continuous action of currents on the rocks. In addition to attracting visitors, the spaces also serve as shelter for species of fauna and flora in the region.
Experts warn, however, that the depth of the formations and the movement of water can pose risks to bathers. At some points, there is the possibility of formation of vortices and whirlpools, which requires extra attention from visitors during diving and swimming activities.
