The Bahian filmmaker, writer, screenwriter and cultural manager Orlando Senna died this Tuesday afternoon (9), aged 86. The information was confirmed by the director's niece, Indra Rocha, via social media. The cause of death was not disclosed.
A prominent name in Brazilian cinema, Orlando Senna gained national and international recognition when he co-directed, alongside Jorge Bodanzky, the film "Iracema – Uma Transa Amazônica" (1975), considered a classic and one of the most important audiovisual works in the country. The film, which mixes fiction and documentary, portrays the reality of the Amazon region during the construction of the Transamazônica and was subject to censorship during the military regime.
Born in 1940, in Afrânio Peixoto, Lençóis district, in Chapada Diamantina, Senna built a remarkable career in Brazilian cinema and culture. He was one of the names linked to the Cinema Novo movement and interacted with important cultural figures, such as Jorge Amado, Gabriel García Márquez, Glauber Rocha, Chico Buarque, Hector Babenco, Geraldo Sarno and Ruy Guerra.

In a statement, the Cultural Foundation of the State of Bahia (Funceb) lamented the filmmaker's death and highlighted that his performance was marked by his commitment to the democratization of culture, the defense of national cinema and the appreciation of Brazilian narratives. Career
Orlando Senna began his audiovisual career as assistant director to Roberto Pires on the film "Tocaia no Asfalto" (1962). Still in Bahia, he directed short films and plays, working at the Theater School of the Federal University of Bahia and at the Centro Popular de Cultura.
At the end of the 1960s, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he directed his first feature film, "A Construção da Morte" (1969). In addition to film production, he also worked internationally, spending time in Cuba in the 1990s, where he was a professor and director of the International School of Cinema and TV in San Antonio de los Baños.
Throughout his career, he also held important public positions. He was undersecretary of Audiovisual at the Rio de Janeiro State Department of Culture during the government of Benedita da Silva, in addition to having acted as a script consultant on different projects, such as the documentary "Glauber, the film – Labirinto do Brasil" (2004), by Silvio Tendler.
In 2003, he took over the Audiovisual Secretariat of the Ministry of Culture and, in 2007, he began directing Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC), where he participated in the creation of TV Brasil. He left the position in 2008.
With a career marked by artistic production and public management, Orlando Senna made an important contribution to the development of cinema and culture in Brazil.
