Aerial images also show the whale moving with difficulty due to the net. The agents used a boat to approach the mammal. They needed to act quickly and carefully to prevent the animal from being injured or further weakened.
After moments of tension, the whale was freed and the net was collected by the Environmental Guard teams.
"We have just collected the net that trapped the whale. It will be seized by the Environmental Guard. Now it's time to try to investigate, find who placed that net in that location, whether it is allowed or not, and that the City Hall may be carrying out inspections. The important thing is that the whale was saved, and the City Hall did its part. The Fire Department acted quickly. And we can only thank these noble warriors here", declared the Secretary of Civil Defense of Rio das Ostras, Edmilson Silva.
The case was also forwarded to the Lakes Region Marine Mammal Study Group, which will monitor the incident and determine responsibility for the use of the network.
Whale season
At the end of May, a humpback whale was found dead at sea in Arraial do Cabo. She was buried after a management operation carried out between May 29th and June 1st in Praia Grande.
Civil Defense warns that at this time of year the season for whales passing along the coast of Rio de Janeiro begins, and it is essential to respect environmental rules, avoiding the installation of irregular nets close to the coast.
On May 6, a group of whales was also spotted in Arraial do Cabo, reinforcing records that have been made since March, well before the official start of the whale migration season, according to the Environment, Science and Technology Foundation (Funtec).
Whales appear before the season and are already seen in Arraial do Cabo
