Sérgio Louruz/PMPA
The gaucho who never ran away from a lapwing will throw the first stone. With 37 centimeters of pure bravery, he does not hesitate to attack anyone who approaches his offspring. Not even the unsuspecting who pass by without having any idea of the existence of a nest are spared.
The bird, known as the symbol of Rio Grande do Sul, becomes even more territorial during breeding seasons. To ward off predators, the bird flies low and uses sharp spurs on the tips of its wings as a means of attack.

What does the legend say
The story goes that, at the beginning of time, an indigenous tribe roamed the fields. At night, tired from traveling, they slept soundly under the stars. But danger lurked in the shadows.
However, a "guardian sent by nature" watched over the tribe's sleep. Upon noticing any strange movement, the lapwings screamed and the sound echoed through the thighs, removing any possible threat.
Passed from generation to generation, the legend helped transform the bird into a symbol of protection in the popular imagination. Despite its aggressive reputation, the bird has become a true icon of Rio Grande do Sul culture.
