Renovation as an alternative: tearing down a dilapidated bridge - is that necessary?

Thousands of German motorway bridges are dilapidated. So far, in most cases this has meant demolition and new construction. But this takes decades and the costs are enormous. Does it really always have to be rebuilt? By Christof Dörr.
