Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp revealed the story of how he flew a private plane to recruit Kylian Mbappe. Klopp recalled that the negotiations at the time fell through and this attempt remained the “most expensive failed signing” in Liverpool’s history. According to Britain’s The Sun on the 10th (local time), Klopp appeared on German broadcaster MagentaTV’s broadcast of the 2026 North and Central America World Cup and told an anecdote about pushing for Mbappe’s signing in 2017 when he was playing at AS Monaco. Klopp said Mbappe and his family avoided outside attention. They announced that they had prepared a private plane from Blackpool, England to Nice, France to enable negotiations. He explained that at the time, he had a meal and conversation with his family on the private plane, and spent time circling the plane continuously to prevent the negotiation from becoming known. “It was the most expensive signing we have ever invested in,” he said. “In Nice, the entire Mbappe family got on a private plane, and we made really big preparations. We didn’t want people to find out, so we kept the plane flying in a circle and talked to the family.”
