The government is considering a plan to build a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) combined cycle power plant near Gwangju, Jeollanam-do, where four semiconductor factories (fabs) will be built. This is because it is judged that not only existing renewable energy generation and new nuclear power plants, but also LNG power plants are needed to ensure a stable supply of power, which is essential for semiconductor fab operation. According to Sejong government agencies and public energy companies on the 8th, the government is said to be considering supplying part of the power required for the fourth semiconductor fab to be built at the Gwangju military airport site to an LNG combined cycle power plant. To this end, plans are being discussed to include a plan to build a new LNG combined cycle power plant in the 12th basic plan for electricity supply and demand to be prepared within the year. The government has also virtually formalized the construction of a new nuclear power plant. Previously, Minister of Climate, Energy and Environment Kim Seong-hwan said on the 3rd, “As it is not easy to meet the increasing demand for electricity by expanding renewable energy alone, we need to quickly review whether to build additional nuclear power plants.” He added, “It is reported that there is a site where two more units can be built at the Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant in Yeonggwang, Jeollanam-do, and a site where two more units can be added in Ulju.”
