Kakao Bank announced on the 8th that one out of three cases of fraud (smishing) using text messages was related to financial transactions. According to Kakao Bank, as a result of analyzing 10,024 suspected smishing texts received through the ‘Artificial Intelligence (AI) Smishing Text Confirmation’ service in the first half of this year, smishing disguised as financial transaction information was the most common, at 33% of the total. These statistics were from January to June of this year. Based on the received data, Kakao Bank's AI Data Driven team analyzed major keywords and classified them by type. As a result of the analysis, the most identified type was financial transaction-related smishing (33%). This was followed by ▲authentication/personal information verification (28%) ▲public institution information (13%) ▲courier/delivery (11%) ▲acquaintances/congratulatory messages (5%) ▲others (10%). There were many cases of smishing related to financial transactions that promoted access to phishing sites or installation of malicious apps by claiming to be payment approval, deposit, refund, or account verification. Authentication and personal information verification types reduce user anxiety under the pretense of checking account security or verifying personal information.
