A court ruled that the arrest of Shincheonji Chairman Lee Man-hee, who is accused of enlisting Shincheonji believers as People Power Party members, was legal. On the 28th, the Seoul Central District Court decided to dismiss the request for detention adequacy review requested by Chairman Lee. A detention adequacy review is a system in which a detained suspect requests the court to reconsider the detention on the grounds that it is unfair. Previously, on the 24th of this month, the Seoul Central District Court issued an arrest warrant for President Lee on charges of violating the Political Parties Act, saying, “There is a risk of destroying evidence,” through interrogation of the suspect (substantive warrant review) before arrest. Chairman Lee is suspected of having Shincheonji believers join the People Power Party as party members for the purpose of influencing the 2021-2024 People Power Party presidential candidate primary and general elections. The joint investigation headquarters of the prosecution and police, which is investigating suspicions of collusion between the Unification Church and Shincheonji, believes that at least 56,472 believers have joined the People Power Party.
