Image of Our Lady of Aparecida is stolen from church in MS An image of Our Lady of Aparecida was stolen from the Nossa Senhora da Candelária Cathedral, in Corumbá, this Wednesday morning (17), and found hours later hidden in the Santa Cruz Cemetery. The suspect was located by the Civil Police, confessed to the crime and indicated where he had left the religious piece. Security cameras recorded all the movement. According to the investigation, the man entered the cathedral, in the city center, at around 8:20 am. According to the Civil Police, the image of Our Lady of Aparecida was inside the packaging. Cathedral employees noticed the disappearance of the piece and called the police. Based on the characteristics recorded by the cameras, teams began searching the region and managed to locate the suspect shortly afterwards. During the approach, the man confessed to the theft and revealed where he had hidden the image. The piece was found in the Santa Cruz Cemetery and recovered by police officers. The motivation for the crime was not disclosed. The suspect remains in custody and must undergo a custody hearing. Symbol of faith More than a religious object, the image is part of the heritage of the Nossa Senhora da Candelária Cathedral and represents a symbol of devotion for the Catholic community of Corumbá. The piece was taken to the city in 2017 by Bishop Dom Martinez, during the celebrations of the 300th anniversary of the finding of the image of Our Lady of Aparecida in the Paraíba do Sul River, in São Paulo.
