Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), voted this Tuesday (16) to convict former federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro for the crime of coercion during the process. The vote of the minister, who is the rapporteur of the case, was given in the trial of the criminal action in which the former deputy is a defendant for articulating measures such as the United States tariff against Brazilian exports, the revocation of visas of ministers of the Court and the federal government, in addition to the application of the economic sanctions of the Magnitsky Law to try to avoid the conviction of former president Jair Bolsonaro in the coup plot process.  Related news: DPU defends Eduardo Bolsonaro's acquittal in the tariff process. The rapporteur said that the indictment by the Attorney General's Office (PGR) detailed the crimes committed by Eduardo Bolsonaro, including handing over confidential documents to President Donald Trump's government and favoring Bolsonaro's interests. "The connection was clear. Sanctions were applied to Brazil, and the defendant's statements, saying that this would be a side effect. What mattered was the fight they were doing, even if millions of Brazilians were harmed by tariffs and other sanctions", he stated. >> Follow the Agência Brasil channel on WhatsApp Moraes also showed several videos published on social media that prove his actions against the Supreme Court and against Brazil.  "It is not the role of a Brazilian federal deputy to lobby abroad against his own country", he commented.  Furthermore, the minister said that the former deputy brought disinformation to the North American government and harmed Brazil. However, according to Moraes, the actions did not prevent Bolsonaro from being sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison.  "In order to benefit his own father, the criminal activity of the then licensed deputy harmed the entire country, and did not frighten this Court", he added.  >> Follow the Agência Brasil channel on WhatsApp Subpoena  Moraes also said that Eduardo cannot benefit from "his own turpitude" and claim ignorance about the process.  According to the Federal Public Defender's Office (DPU), which defended Eduardo, he should have been notified to present a defense through a letter rogatory, a legal instrument for notifying people abroad.  During the process, the STF ordered the notification of the former deputy by notice, but he was not found nor appointed a private lawyer. "Criminal proceedings are not jokes, the application of justice is not jokes", highlighted Moraes.  After the rapporteur's vote, the session continues to take the votes of ministers Cristiano Zanin, Cármen Lúcia and Flávio Dino.
