The earthquake hit a high area in Qinghai's Haixi prefecture at a depth of 10 km at 5:06 pm (Beijing time) today, according to the China Seismic Network Center.

State media also reported that all workers in coal mines near the epicenter had been evacuated and that authorities were still assessing the number of victims and material damage.
Earlier, state news agency Xinhua reported that rescue teams were heading to the site to search for trapped people and assess the risks of secondary disasters.
China's seismic administration activated emergency response for the quake, which was followed by several aftershocks, including one with a magnitude of 4.9.
