The information comes from the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Cavaliere, who visited Rua 1, in the upper part of the community, on Monday night (15). There, due to heavy rain in the region, a landslide caused the closure of Estrada da Gávea, one of the main access points to the community.

According to Cavaliere, teams from the Conservation Secretariat and the Urban Cleaning Company (Comlurb) are working to free up the stretch.
Videos recorded by residents show the extent of the damage. The images show the moment the debris reached 1st Street and invaded an evangelical church.
Some parked motorcycles were buried. Cars, motorcycles and even store marquees were swept away by the force of water and land.
“Based on the report that will be prepared by the municipal civil defense in conjunction with the Rio Geotechnical Institute (Geo-Rio), we will begin emergency works and construction of channels to prevent new landslides”, explained the mayor.
In a note, Águas do Rio informs that operational teams are mobilized on Rua 1, in Rocinha, and work together with the city hall to remove the rubble and respond to the incident recorded last night (15).
According to the concessionaire, “only a small damaged sewage pipe was identified at the site of the landslide”. In Rocinha, it rained heavily, with 64.6 millimeters (mm) of rain accumulated in four hours in the community. Despite the damage, no one was injured.
