A video released by the Fire Department shows the moment a saruê jumps as it is returned to the wild, after being rescued from the backyard of a house in Alto Araguaia, 422 km from Cuiabá, this Sunday (14).
According to firefighters, residents called the team after finding the animal hidden inside a plant pot outside the residence.
In the images, it is possible to see the saruê being removed from the house and then running into the woods after being released. When placed on the ground, the animal 'jumps' and then runs to its natural habitat (see video above).

In March of this year, firefighters also rescued a Saruês family in the municipality. At the time, a female and four cubs were found.
After rescue, the animal was taken to an area away from the urban area, where it was returned to its natural habitat.

🦡 Saruê
The saruê is a species of opossum with nocturnal habits and plays an important role in environmental balance, helping to disperse seeds and recover degraded areas.
With the reduction of Cerrado areas, these animals have been seen more frequently in urban regions in search of food.
According to the Fire Department, although it is common to find it near homes, the saruê is a wild animal and should not be raised as a domestic animal.
🦡What to do when you find a wild animal?
The State Secretariat for the Environment (Sema) reinforces that, when finding a wild animal in need of rescue, the population must call the Military Police or the Fire Department.
The advice is not to try to capture the animal, to avoid risks to both the safety of people and the integrity of the animal.
When placed on the ground, the animal 'jumps' and then runs to its natural habitat.
