The couple were childhood friends
The story with his partner, Jônatas Leite, began after years of living together. They were neighbors in São Gonçalo do Abaeté, in the Northwest of Minas, and friends since childhood. The relationship began about a year ago and, shortly after, they discovered the pregnancy.
According to the family, Bárbara and Jônatas shared plans for the future and enjoyed spending time together. "She liked traveling, going for walks and being close to her husband and family", says Jusimara.
The two also planned to build a life together. Among the projects were buying her a car and building the house where they intended to live. The two even shared a special coincidence: she was born on December 4, 1996 and he was born on December 5, 1997, one year and one day apart.
Since the death of Bárbara and baby Augusto Manoel, the family has been following Jônatas' suffering. According to Jusimara, her son still has difficulty accepting the loss of his partner, with whom he shared his routine and dreams for the future.
As the families live close together, he often looks towards the house where Bárbara lived and calls her name. He also started visiting the cemetery several times a day to say goodbye. “It’s heartbreaking to see what my son is going through,” says Jusimara.
Police reconstructed chronological order of calls
The Civil Police reconstructed the sequence of attempts made by the medical team to call obstetrician Higo Moreira Fonseca during Bárbara's hospitalization, who was scheduled to be on call.
According to the statements gathered during the investigation, Bárbara showed signs of worsening of her clinical condition, compatible with severe eclampsia.
1st attempt (10:08 pm) - the first altered tests: According to the investigation, upon admission to the hospital, Bárbara had a blood pressure of 180 to 80 mmHg. The doctor on duty states in her statement that she sent the results of the first exams to obstetrician Higo Moreira Fonseca, via WhatsApp. According to reports gathered by the Civil Police, Higo assessed that the symptoms could be related to the pregnant woman's anxiety. According to the investigation, he stated that the case was not obstetric in nature and, therefore, he did not attend the hospital at that time.
From the 2nd to the 5th attempt - messages and calls during the night: As the patient's health condition worsened and new tests indicated an increased risk, the medical team claims to have made new attempts to contact the obstetrician via messages and phone calls. According to statements collected by the Civil Police, the professionals informed Higo about the evolution of his clinical condition and reinforced the need for his presence at the hospital. Still, according to reports, he remained at home.
6th attempt (around 5 am) - request for help in the face of worsening: According to the investigation, Bárbara Luana presented a significant deterioration in her health and needed to be transferred to the Red Room. Given the situation, the doctor on duty stated that she made a new call to the obstetrician. In her statement, the professional stated that she tried to explain the seriousness of the case. However, according to his report, the doctor insisted that the care should be carried out by the medical clinic team and ended the call.
7th attempt - new call and final refusal: Shortly after the call, the medical team made a new attempt to contact the obstetrician. This time, a nursing technician spoke directly to the doctor and also asked him to come to the hospital. According to statements gathered by the Civil Police, the obstetrician once again stated that he would not go to the unit.
Still according to the investigation, at 5:17 am, while the team was trying to reverse Bárbara Luana's critical condition in the Red Room, the doctor sent a message to the hospital's clinical staff WhatsApp group with the text: "pregnant patients with clinical conditions, including psychotic episodes, without obstetric complaints, should be taken to the medical clinic".
The corporation is awaiting medical reports and reports from the Legal Medical Institute (IML) to confirm the cause of Bárbara and the baby's deaths.
