Climatologist analyzes unseasonal storms in the region With 108.6 millimeters of rain accumulated until this Monday (15), June 2026 is already the wettest in the historical series in Uberlândia. Data from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) show that the volume recorded exceeds by almost 68% the old record for the month, of 64.8 millimeters, recorded in 2016. At a time of year normally marked by drought, the storms that hit Uberlândia since Friday (12), accompanied by hail and gusts of wind, left people stranded, streets and houses flooded, caused interruptions in the power supply, fallen trees and even a fire caused by a lightning strike. According to climatologist Paulo César Mendes, the phenomenon was caused by the combination of an extratropical cyclone and humidity coming from the Amazon. "In 2026, we have a record since the beginning of the analysis period in Uberlândia, in the 1980s. We had an accumulated rainfall of 108 millimeters. It is a rare phenomenon because, generally, June, July, August, it practically does not rain in our region and, when it rains, it is isolated rain showers. But rain in this abundance is rare, but it is part of this context", explained the climatologist. ✅ Click here to follow the g1 Triângulo channel on WhatsApp According to Civil Defense, the South and West sectors of the city, especially in the Jardim Holanda, Santa Luzia, Gávea, Canaã and Jaraguá neighborhoods, were the hardest hit, with accumulated rainfall between 127 and 139 millimeters between Friday (12) and Monday (15). Cemig talks about power interruption One of the consequences of the storms was the interruption of power supply in several neighborhoods in Uberlândia. In a press conference held this Monday morning (15), the regional superintendent of Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais (Cemig), Wellington Fazzi Cancian, detailed that the peak of interruptions occurred on Friday (12), when almost 35 thousand customers were left without power. "The wind threw objects into the network, such as medium and large trees, and metallic objects, such as zinc tiles. The networks were destroyed, requiring their reconstruction. We had already prepared a task force to deal with this meteorological alert that we received on Friday and our teams worked around the clock to rebuild the network, not just to restore electricity", said the superintendent. According to the company, on Friday, within eight hours, 75% of power outages were resolved. As of Sunday night, the number of customers without power had been reduced to 2,703. Cemig is still working on resolving specific cases. According to the company, 1. 920 lightning strikes were recorded between Friday and Sunday.
