At the beginning of June, more than 50 thousand doctors and researchers gathered at the largest oncology congress in the world, held in Chicago (USA). Together, they applauded standing up – even emotional and with tears in their eyes – the result of a clinical study. The scene, which is unusual in scientific events like this, was a celebration of the result of daraxonrasib, a pill that doubled the survival of patients with pancreatic cancer, considered the most lethal type of cancer by doctors. Last week, good news came from Ribeirão Preto: researchers from USP announced that CAR-T Cell therapy, which modifies immune system cells, was almost 90% effective in patients with lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. The technology was fully developed in Brazil, and the Minister of Health, Alexandre Padilha, stated that he intends to incorporate the treatment into the SUS.
In this episode, Natuza Nery interviews two doctors. First, she talks to oncologist Fernando Maluf, who explains how daraxonrasib works and tells us the latest in cancer treatment. Afterwards, Diego Villa Clé, coordinator of the research that developed CAR-T Cell therapy at USP-Ribeirão Preto, participates. Also in this episode, Paulo Pelegrino, one of the patients of this experimental treatment, reports part of the remission process of his cancer.
Guests: Fernando Maluf, oncologist and co-founder of the Instituto Vencer o Câncer, and Diego Villa Clé, professor of Hematology at USP and coordinator of Biotechnology and the Center for Advanced Therapies at the Blood Center of Ribeirão Preto.
The O Assunto podcast is produced by: Luiz Felipe Silva, Sarah Resende, Carlos Catelan, Luiz Gabriel Franco, Juliene Moretti, Stéphanie Nascimento and Guilherme Gama. Presentation: Natuza Nery.
