At the Japan Track and Field Championships held in Nagoya City, the boys' 400m hurdles final was held, and 17-year-old Goto Taiki, a second-year student at Rakunan High School in Kyoto Prefecture, took his first victory with a time of 48.09 seconds. Goto set a time of 48.31 seconds in the preliminary round on the 13th, breaking both the world record for under-18s and the Japanese high school record, but he improved those records by an additional 0.22 seconds in the final.
