Rescue teams continue the search for a 14-year-old teenager who remains missing after the sinking of a boat on the Xingu River, in southwestern Pará. As of this Saturday (13), five bodies of indigenous victims of the tragedy had already been located.
The bodies were found by specialized teams that have been working in the region since the accident. Among the victims is Romário Kayapó, a 44-year-old indigenous leader, whose body was the first to be located by divers from the Altamira Fire Department.
After release by the Legal Medical Institute (IML), Romário was taken to the village where he lived. Family members and members of the Kayapó and Xikrin ethnicities followed the body's departure amid moments of commotion.
According to firefighters, the searches are concentrated in an extensive area below the rapids of the Xingu River, in the town known as Rebojo do Avelino, around 70 kilometers from Altamira. The bodies were found more than a kilometer from the place where the wreck occurred.
On the boat were at least ten people from the same family, indigenous people who left the Kararaô Indigenous Land heading to the Laranjal village. The group was traveling to participate in a cultural festival when the vessel sank.
The tragedy mobilized indigenous and riverside communities in the Middle Xingu region, who began to assist teams in the search.
Three of the bodies found arrived in Altamira on Friday afternoon (12), transported in a boat driven by a firefighter. The arrival at the municipality was accompanied by family members of the victims.
The rescue teams use a base of the National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples (Funai) in the Koatinemo Indigenous Land as a support point for operations.
Among the victims located are people aged 5, 12, 22 and 32, as well as Romário Kayapó. The 14-year-old teenager is the only person who has not yet been found.
