Young man completes World Cup album in a week after inheriting passion from his father
The arrival of the World Cup sparks a race against time for a 25-year-old young man in Ribeirão Preto (SP). Driven by a tradition that spans generations in the family, the main objective with the World Cup sticker collection is to fill all the empty spaces in the illustrated book as quickly as possible.
In this year's edition, collector Luiz Otavio Sorrini Junior reached his goal and completed the challenge in just one week.
The young man bought around 140 packs of stickers, spending almost a thousand reais, and waited for the hardcover version of the album to be delivered. When the material arrived, the fan already had all the images ready and separated for collage.
After gathering the stickers for your own collection in record time, the focus shifts to something else. The collector starts to use the repeated images left over from the packages to act in exchanges and help relatives and friends complete their respective albums (understand below).

Family tradition
The passion for football and stickers comes from birth. Born in 2000, Junior says that his first clear memories of the game date back to the 2006 World Cup. At the time, the routine was dictated by his father, who already collected old editions and passed the custom on to the youngest members of the family, including his son's cousin.
"He would stop by the stalls, buy the packages, arrive home from work at 6pm, we would sit at the table and start opening them. He would put everything together, separate them by selection so they could glue them together, separate the duplicates and make a list by hand of how many were missing and how many were left", recalls Junior.
The dynamic continued with his father's support until 2010. From 2014 onwards, the collector took the lead in the game and started chasing his own images in the city's newsstands and squares.
Speed Challenge
The family heirloom turned into a personal goal every four years. Driven by the anxiety that the championship generates, he started collecting alone and turned the hobby into a speed challenge, which explains the seven-day mark reached in the current edition.
"We are anxiously waiting for the moment. The goal is always to finish as quickly as possible. When it launches, one is already chasing the other. This year, it launched on a Friday, but on Thursday I already had a sticker. On Saturday I was already exchanging them. We go with this connection, without vanity", he reports.

The record in 2014
Despite the speed achieved in the most recent collection, the 2014 World Cup holds the young man's personal best. It was the first World Cup in which fans ran after the images without the direct help of their father.
With the tournament based in Brazil and with the support of cousin Igor in exchanges on the streets of the city, the collection was completed in an even shorter time: in three days.
"He released the album, now go there and buy a small package. I remember going alone, my cousin picked it up at home, we went to the newsstand there on Avenida Vargas, we arrived at 8am and stayed until noon changing, until I finished the album. Practically in three or four days we closed something", he recalls.

The 'saves everything' of the group
Maintaining agility when completing spaces requires investment. Just when purchasing this year's packages, the cost reached R$980. Fans estimate that, throughout all the World Cups, they have already invested around R$7,000.
Despite the financial impact, fun gains a new purpose with the leftovers from the investment. After completing the filling, the large volume of repeated stickers receives a new destination. The young man acts as a kind of supplier to ensure that the social circle also experiences the atmosphere of the championship.
"Usually, when I close, I help other people to close: relatives, friends, children of friends. I go after it, I look, I like it. People call me, I'm the one who saves everything", he jokes.
The result of dedication is rigorously preserved in the family home. Books are stored in drawers to avoid scratches or tears. The collection includes old items that belonged to the father, such as a special album imported from Italy that brings together information from all the World Cups until 2002.
"We treat it as if it were an inheritance. Many of the albums belonged to my father, who preserved them, saved them and passed them on to me, and I continue to keep them in the same way so as not to spoil them. The passion for football came from him, so there is nothing more fair than immortalizing them and keeping them safe so that I can show them to my children later on", he concludes.
