In Barra do Quaraí, a city in Rio Grande do Sul located on the triple border between Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, the World Cup divides the fans. With around 4,300 inhabitants, the municipality is home to foreigners, which is reflected in the flags spread across the streets and houses during the competition.
The city has the only triple river border in the country. On one side is Bella Unión, in Uruguay, and on the other, Monte Caseros, in Argentina. As the only land crossing connects the municipality to the Uruguayan side, neighboring citizens are the majority. The city hall estimates that 200 Uruguayans live there.

To celebrate the period, students from the municipal school paint the flags of the three countries on an avenue in the city. The Secretary of Tourism, Argemiro Rocha, highlights the local culture.
"It's a joy every four years for us to have students involved in painting the flags of the three countries, not just Brazil. This shows the great integration we have here in the region", he says.
The cultural mix is reflected in the choice of selections. Children Bernardo da Silva, Leticia Correia and Lucas Correia support Brazil, together with attendant Patricia Doviggi. Housewife Verônica Susalla and sugarcane harvester Nicolas Cala support Uruguay.
Some residents prefer not to choose a single side. App driver Jorge Cutti, who has lived in Brazil for eight years, decorated his house in the colors of both countries. When asked who should win the World Cup, he doesn't name favorites.
"Anyone, anyone. Both Brazil and Uruguay", he states.
Despite the rivalry, geographic proximity unites residents. Sugarcane harvester Nicolas Cala believes that the Uruguayan team will go far in the competition.
However, he guarantees that he will support the country where he lives in the event of elimination. Asked about the fans in a scenario without Uruguay, he is adamant: "Brazil!".
