Toucan is filmed eating bread and biscuits and veterinarian warns of risks to the animal A video captured people feeding a toucan with bread, biscuits and tomatoes this Thursday morning (11), at a wholesale store in Campinas (SP). Although it may seem harmless, the practice is prohibited by law and can pose serious risks to the health of wild birds. According to veterinarian Rodrigo Luiz Domingues, toucans are omnivorous animals, and should not consume ultra-processed foods. "Nothing that is processed by humans, such as bread, biscuits, seasoned meats or even foods prepared in a culinary way, can be offered. This is highly harmful and can cause food poisoning, even leading to the death of the animal", he explains. The expert highlights that, although the toucan can consume tomatoes, the food must be offered exclusively in natura, that is, fresh and without any type of seasoning or preservative. “Tomato is a fruit and can be part of the diet, as long as it is natural, without preparation or addition of substances”, he states. Another point of attention is the risk of dependence caused by human interference. According to the veterinarian, feeding wild animals makes them stop looking for food in nature, which can compromise their survival. "When the animal gets used to an easy feeding point, it becomes dependent on it. When the food is no longer available, it may not be able to adapt to the natural environment again", he warns. What do toucans eat? In nature, the toucan has a varied diet, which includes fruits, seeds, worms and even the chicks of other birds. The specialist reinforces the request that the population not offer leftover food or sweets. “What is tasty for us can be extremely harmful and even fatal for wildlife”, he concludes.
