The Butantan Institute reiterated that it will continue the clinical study on the dengue vaccine carried out since January in four research centers in the southern region of the country. The information had already been raised on Monday (8), during a press conference by the Minister of Health, Alexandre Padilha, who announced the suspension of immunization with the vaccine produced by the institute.  The clinical study aims to investigate how populations that have not had contact with dengue react to vaccination, focusing on the elderly, evaluating safety and comparing the immunological response through laboratory tests. One of the objectives is to understand whether the production of antibodies in elderly participants is similar to that of the adult group, the target of previous studies with the vaccine. Ministry of Health suspends Butantan dengue vaccine. The southern region of the country was chosen due to its low incidence of the disease. Most volunteer vacancies are for people between 60 and 79 years old. The clinical tests will be carried out over the course of a year, in Porto Alegre and Pelotas, in Rio Grande do Sul, and in Curitiba. The immunizing agent was suspended from its use in the population, to study specific cases in which there were serious adverse reactions, with two deaths. "We have to understand the nature of this investigation. Vaccination may be resumed and this depends on this discussion process. We are confident that the vaccine is an important weapon in the fight against dengue and we must base this resumption on very rigorous and careful data, and on scientific methodology", declared doctor Ésper Kallas, director of the Butantan Institute, to AgênciaSP, the São Paulo state news agency.
